What Are Your Kids Drinking?

We all crave recognition and praise at some point in our lives, and winning an award is possibly one of the best feelings a child can experience.Agave Melon Water 150x150 What Are Your Kids Drinking?

There are some awards however, that aren’t so desirable… Such as the 20 Worst Drinks in America 2010.  The list is nothing short of remarkable, with some well known beverages on the list.  Even a version of water makes it onto this not-so-fabulous list!

The list compares the amount of sugar and saturated fat in the drinks, to highly sugary sweets such as donuts, and popsicles.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying “you are what you eat”.  This now brings new meaning to that, adding “you are what you drink” to the ever growing list of catch phrases.Sunkist Soda1 150x150 What Are Your Kids Drinking?

It’s no longer enough to worry just about what food your child consumes.  What they drink is equally vital.  Particularly for children who display ADHD behaviour on a regular basis.

Why give a hyperactive child large amounts of sugar to consume?  Added to which, the sugar is addictive, so the more your child consumes, the more they will crave it.  Take a look at a presentation made by Jamie Oliver at a TED conference this year.

Be aware that when you’re giving your child a milkshake or a smoothie, that you are in fact giving them the equivalent of about 10 candy bars, depending on the drink.

Even fruit juice can be deceptive, particularly those with added sugar.  Some “juices” will even say on the packaging that they have 25% real fruit juice.  What is the other 75% made of?

Get in the habit of reading the ingredients list on everything.  After a while, once you have established the brands you like and are healthy, then you won’t need to look as often.

If you want your kids to be happy and healthy, and not suffer from behavioural problems that result in them being prescribed amphetamines, then you’ll need to put in the effort upfront.  Then you will be able to enjoy the harmonious company of your truly wonderful son or daughter.
